Finidi George Reveals Why He Resigned As Super Eagles Coach.

George Finidi, Ex- Super Eagles Coach, has clarified the controversy stemming from his shock decision to resign as head coach of the Nigeria senior men’s National Football Team.

On Saturday, June 15, news emerged that Finidi has resigned from his post with the development coming in the wake of Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen’s epic rant against Finidi after the latter reportedly questioned Osimhen’s commitment to the national team.

However, in a letter cited by BSN Sports, Finidi pointed to the Nigerian Football Federation’s decision to appoint a foreign Technical Adviser as the reason behind his resignation after overseeing Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Benin and 1-1 draw with South Africa in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

“While the recent qualifying results haven’t been ideal. I remained commited to guiding our World Cup qualification campaign back on course. Given the recent changes to the technical crew, I believe it’s time for me to step aside.” the former Real Betis winger wrote.

The letter continued, “I am writing to inform you of my decision to step down as head coach of the Super Eagles. This decision is made in light of the recent changes to the team’s technical staff. Please be assured of my unwavering support for the team and I wish us all the best in the future”

Nigeria is anked fifth in the six team Group C standings in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with Rwanda, South Africa and Benin leading the way with seven points but separated by goal difference while the 2013 African champions have three points from four matches.
